Campaign People

How it all began

In the autumn of 2002 a number of key leaders from the voluntary and business sectors expressed their concerns about the growing apathy in Northern Ireland to the Peace Process. Sectarian attitudes appeared to be hardening and research indicated a growing disillusionment, since the Good Friday Agreement. There was a real sense that the time was right for a new focused initiative aimed at injecting some positivity into Northern Ireland. It was felt that there was a need to ask everyone to do something positive to build peace and deal with sectarianism.

Out of these discussions, over several weeks, the One Small Step Campaign was born.

A Core Team appointed a Campaign Director on 17 February 2003 and the Campaign was launched on Thursday 27 February prior to the Ministerial Talks at Hillsborough on 3 / 4 March.

The Campaign launch consisted of simultaneous advertisements in the two Belfast morning newspapers - The Irish News and the News Letter. Both papers carried detailed editorial comment.

The Campaign plans to develop a programme of activities over the coming weeks but its primary objective is to encourage individuals to take One Small Step in Building Peace
